Those following the two-year Bible reading plan with me will begin reading Numbers tomorrow, April 24. (Link to the Two-Year Bible Reading Plan)
The book of Numbers covers the time the Israelites wandered in the desert before they eventually entered the Promised Land. The first 10 chapters include a thorough census of the Israelite people. It also includes plans for how the Israelites would move from place to place as they approached the Promised Land.
The next chapters tell of the spies the Israelites sent into the Promised Land and of their fearful response. Only Joshua and Caleb trusted God, the rest cowered in fear and spread their fears to the Israelites. For this reason, the Israelites had to wander in the desert another 40 years before entering the Promised Land. The remainder of the book of Numbers tells of their wanderings and fluctuations in their faith in God.

We will be reading the book of Psalms for the next three and a half months. Savor over them as you read. The first 41 chapters are known as the Psalms of David. These include several well-known favorites including the 23rd Psalm that you may have already committed to memory.
Book 2 of the Psalms includes chapters 42-72 and are attributed to David and by the “sons of Korah.” It isn’t fully clear who the sons of Korah were, but we know they wrote Psalms 42-49. The “Korahites” in King David’s time were the gatekeepers, not the musicians. Most of the rest of the Psalms in Book 2 were written by King David.
Book 3 includes chapters 73-89. Many of these Psalms are attributed to Asaph, one of the three chief musicians appointed by King David.
Book 4 includes chapters 90-106. Most of these do not name the authors.
Book 5 includes chapters 107-150. David wrote several of these Psalms, but many don’t identify the authors.

We have been reading in Exodus about the instructions God gave to Moses for making the tabernacle and everything that was to go in it; then we read how the Israelites completed the project to every detail. Next the Israelites needed instructions on how to appropriate these sacred objects for the worship of God.

Father God, help us to see your mighty hand at work through the weeks ahead as we face and wonder what the coronavirus might bring our way. Here in South Carolina our schools have been closed through the end of the month. My church has cancelled all activities for the next two weeks. Shelves in the stores are bare of many basic necessities as people have panicked and grabbed more than they needed while others have to go without. Forgive us for our self-focus that causes us to hurt others. Help us to put our confidence and trust in you instead of giving way to fear. Continue reading →
