Leviticus
Those following the two-year Bible reading plan with me will begin reading Leviticus tomorrow, March 30. (Link to the Two-Year Bible Reading Plan)
We have been reading in Exodus about the instructions God gave to Moses for making the tabernacle and everything that was to go in it; then we read how the Israelites completed the project to every detail. Next the Israelites needed instructions on how to appropriate these sacred objects for the worship of God.
Leviticus is sometimes called the Book of Atonement. The beginning chapters outline the duties of the priests in offering the various sacrifices, of which many were for the atonement of sin. God is a holy God and the people needed to understand the importance of being holy themselves. The sin offerings were designed to impress upon the people the seriousness of sin and the importance of holiness.
Leviticus also devotes several chapters giving many rules about how to live with one another in an honorable and holy way. Leviticus is a guidebook for holy living.
Leviticus also includes instructions on the celebrations that were expected of the Israelite people to honor all that God had done for them.
