Psalm 28:6-9 Answered Prayer

His Whisperings Posted on January 14, 2008 by Janice D. GreenJanuary 14, 2008

6 Praise be to the LORD,
     for he has heard my cry for mercy.
7 The LORD is my strength and my shield;
     my heart trusts in him, and I am helped.
My heart leaps for joy
     and I will give thanks to him in song.

8 The LORD is the strength of his people,
     a fortress of salvation for his anointed one.
9 Save your people and bless your inheritance;
     be their shepherd and carry them forever.   (Psalm 28:6-9  NIV)

     Do you remember the first time you prayed a serious heart-felt prayer for something and God answered?  God answered such a prayer for me when I was in the second or third grade.  I was a farm girl and had taken my only pair of shoes off one Saturday in the field behind the barn where we were hoeing and pulling weeds.  The next morning I couldn’t find my shoes for church and remembered taking them off in the field.  I didn’t want to miss because I was trying to get perfect attendance, so I hurried to the field and searched the long rows from one end to the other without finding them.  Then it occurred to me that this could be something I should pray about.  I don’t remember my exact words, but my thinking was something like “God, if you really do answer prayers, help me find my shoes.”  I had no more than finished my prayer when I opened my eyes with new hope, turned around and there were my shoes on the ground behind me.  It was so awesome!  What a powerhouse this memory has been to me even to this day, some 50 years later.

     I could recall many other such experiences such as the time I prayed it wouldn’t rain on a particular outing of the Science Club.  I was looking forward to the trip so much and was afraid the rain would ruin everything.  I learned that day that God has a sense of humor.  It rained, but who cared?  We got hold of some squirt guns and had a blast.  It was one of the most fun outings in my memories of high school.

     And on a more serious note, I once came so close to a major financial catastrophe when I had misunderstood the fine print of my college loan.  I had gone too long without registering for another class which meant I would have to take 9 hours credit per semester instead of 6 or start paying my loan back immediately.  The only way out was for me to enroll in a class within a week and I wasn’t free from my job as school librarian for five more weeks.  The loans for my masters’ degree had seemed to be such a fantastic blessing from God, nothing short of a miracle in itself.  “How could you allow this dreadful thing to happen to me?” I poured my heart out to God.  I was heart sick.  I wanted to shake my fist at God.  “What can I do now?”  I pleaded with him.  I had to work to have an income.  I couldn’t afford pay for the loan; I was expecting to have it forgiven in return for service as a school librarian.  And I knew I couldn’t carry 9 hours of graduate work in addition to holding down my full-time job.  After much discussion of my situation with God, I picked up the letter that had come in the mail and decided to call the loan officer.  The only thing I could do was to enroll in a class within a week.  I looked again at the summer school schedule.  The summer term would start soon enough, but I would still be in school for four of the five weeks of class.  Praise the Lord!  There was one class, a class I needed, that was offered as a TV course with only two Saturdays that I would have to drive to the campus.  To quote David’s psalm, “Praise be to the LORD, for he has heard my cry for mercy.”  God had pulled yet one more miracle of many during my college career.  I was able to finish my degree with no more lapses in  time, and every class I needed to take was available at a time I could take it.

     I didn’t mean to spend so much time writing about myself, but it is through serious praying that we learn that God is there for us.   One day when we finally receive our heavenly reward and we see our lives pass before us, we will be astonished at how much was accomplished in our lives as a result of prayer.  Sadly, we may also have revealed how much we missed in life because we neglected to spend more time in prayer.

      Verse seven says God is my strength and shield.  It is through prayer that we lay claim to this strength.  God works through our prayers as well as our regular Bible reading to keep us strong.  Have you been keeping close contact with God lately, or do you need to move a little closer?  He promises that if we will draw near to him, he will draw near to us.  (James 4:8)

Psalm 37:35-40 God blesses the peacemakers

His Whisperings Posted on January 13, 2008 by Janice D. GreenJanuary 13, 2008

35 I have seen a wicked and ruthless man
     flourishing like a green tree in its native soil,
36 but he soon passed away and was no more;
     though I looked for him, he could not be found.

37 Consider the blameless, observe the upright;
     there is a future for the man of peace.
38 But all sinners will be destroyed;
     the future of the wicked will be cut off.

39 The salvation of the righteous comes from the LORD;
     he is their stronghold in time of trouble.
40 The LORD helps them and delivers them;
     he delivers them from the wicked and saves them,
     because they take refuge in him.
     (Psalm 37:35-40  NIV)

What a wonderful promise this is from the Lord.  If we live blameless and upright He will bless us in times of trouble and will deliver us from the wicked.  We can take refuge in him, and he will save us.  We may or may not see this fulfilled completely in our lifetimes, but it will surely come to pass in the end.

Luke 6:34-36 Called to be Generous

His Whisperings Posted on January 13, 2008 by Janice D. GreenJanuary 13, 2008

34 And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even ‘sinners’ lend to ‘sinners,’ expecting to be repaid in full. 35 But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. 36 Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.  (Luke 6:34-36  NIV)

     God expects his children to be generous givers, not counting the cost.  We should be willing to make loans to people who are in need without concerning ourselves with whether we will even be repaid.  That is radical thinking in our modern society when the majority of the people consider that the purpose of a loan is for the lender to make money off of the borrower through interest.  High interest lenders will knock themselves out for the opportunity to lend you money having no concern for whether you can make more than a minimum payment.  But this verse makes it clear that we are not to look for repayment, let alone interest.  Many lukewarm Christians fall short on this command from the Lord.

     Does this mean we are to give money freely to anyone who asks?  Only if it will truly help them.  We do not help the drug addict by giving him money to buy another “fix.”  We do not help a person who doesn’t want to get a job by enabling them to freeload off of us.

     Peter responded to the beggar saying, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.”  (Acts 3:6 NIV) It is a matter of good stewardship to give what would be truly helpful, not simply what was requested.

Luke 6:31 Golden Rule

His Whisperings Posted on January 13, 2008 by Janice D. GreenJanuary 13, 2008

31 Do to others as you would have them do to you.  (Luke 6:31  NIV)

This verse is generally referred to as the Golden Rule.  It is so simple that even a child can understand it.  Treat others the way you want others to treat you.

The only way I can see someone misunderstanding this verse is if they want to take it too literally.  A person who loves skydiving, for instance, doesn’t have to take others who are afraid of heights and put them in an airplane with a parachute on their backs.

This rule applies to things like respect, thoughtfulness, kindness, patience, love, helpfulness, etc.

Luke 6:29-30 Absorb injustice

His Whisperings Posted on January 13, 2008 by Janice D. GreenJanuary 13, 2008

29 If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also. If someone takes your cloak, do not stop him from taking your tunic. 30 Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back.

Luke 6:29-30 (NIV)

This is a tall order, but Jesus doesn’t ask us to do something he didn’t model for us.  He was willing to take the abuse, even upon a cross, in order to show the full extent of his love.  That still doesn’t make it easy for us to do.  We are so into getting our “rights,” anything good that we feel we are due; and we think nothing should ever stand in our way to get them.

Mahatma Gandhi gives us examples of how he led the people of India in their struggle for freedom from British rule. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. used Gandhi’s example to help the black American citizens gain the privileges that should have been theirs in the first place—to ride anywhere on a bus, to get a good education, to eat in any public restaurant, and more.

Today it is difficult to even think of willingly taking abuse from another.  People are so quick to take anyone to court that crosses us.  I get upset about people taking my pens—my desk at work is close to the telephone and my room (school library) is where we have staff meetings, so I get cleaned out quite frequently by people who forget to bring a pen with them, yet they forget that the pen was borrowed when they leave.  I would probably do myself more harm than good if I made a big scene about this, and pens are relatively cheap.  But this is such a tame example of turning the other cheek.

What about deliberate abuse that is vicious?  Verse 29 is referring to a form of physical assault.  That is really hard.  In the example given in the verse, I visualize the person receiving the assault as standing up—using his own strength and free will he stood there and offered the other cheek.  This is not a life threatening form of abuse.  I don’t feel that Jesus expects us to take life-threatening abuse and volunteer to come back for more unless there is some very high and worthy cause at stake that you are willing to die for, as in the case of Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. King.

In the situation of an abused spouse, a choice must be made.  Will accepting the suffering bring the couple closer together, or will it bring the abuser closer to Christ?  I should think this situation should be bathed in much prayer.  The abused person needs to surround him/herself with prayer warriors.  And the abused person must be so filled with the joy of the Lord that, in spite of the abuse, he/she can still hold his/her head up with a sense of victory to effectively speak without words to his/her abusive spouse.  This is no small task. These two verses may ask at lot of us.  Are you ready to give Christ your all?
