Bible scholars can only speculate over who penned the book of Hebrews as there are no clear clues. Some possibilities are Paul, Barnabus, Apollos, or a friend of Timothy, but no one can say for certain.

The book of Hebrews (letter) was written primarily to converts who were being tempted to turn away from their new-found faith and resume their old forms of worship. Continue reading →

Philemon

Paul wrote this letter to Philemon, a Christian man, as well as to other specific individuals and to their house church. But the primary recipient of the letter is Philemon who Paul’s appeals to, hoping he will accept the return of Onesimus, his runaway slave, with kindness and appreciation. Onesimus had become a believer under Paul’s teaching and had become a changed and useful man.

Titus

Paul wrote this letter to Titus, one of his converts. Paul had great confidence in Titus and left him on the island of Crete to help organize and care for the churches there. This letter was written to give him additional guidance and support as he dealt with opposition and false teachers. It also includes foundations for living the Christian life.

2 Timothy

Second Timothy is the second of two letters Paul wrote to Timothy. This time Paul is struggling in prison and realizes that his life and ministry will soon come to an end. Paul writes of his loneliness and longing for Timothy to come to him. He wrote to encourage Timothy to carry on his work, and he wanted him to share this letter with the Ephesian church.

This new fully revised edition of the NIV Study Bible is Great! It has so many helpful features for the serious Bible student. I have been enjoying this copy for about a month now.

What I Like about the new fully revised NIV Study Bible:

  • Charts and diagrams to help organize various kinds of information in the Bible. This is probably my favorite of the features as I’ve been reading with the intention of better organizing these details in my mind so I can better see the whole picture of the biblical accounts. For the past two years I’ve been writing out my own lists of names and genealogies trying to keep them sorted out so I could refer back to them. With this new Bible, these and more have been done in charts that are easy to read and understand.
