Colossians 2_8Those following the two-year Bible reading plan with me will begin reading the book of Colossians tomorrow, October 11 (Link to the Two-Year Bible Reading Plan)

The book of Colossians is a letter Paul wrote while a prisoner under guard in his own house in Rome. It was written to the church in the city of Colosse. This city is near the coast in the land we now know as Turkey. The people of the church in Colosse were non-Jewish, and referred to as Gentiles.

Paul learned that false teachers had come requiring these Gentiles to worship angels and to follow strict Jewish ceremonies. Paul wrote this letter to correct the false doctrines that had been given to them.

Paul’s message was strong in teaching a better understanding of who Jesus is, his headship over the church, and the power he has over all things. Paul encouraged the people to live holy lives and to work diligently in all things as their gift to God.

Philippians

Phil 3-6Those following the two-year Bible reading plan with me will begin reading the book of Philippians tomorrow, October 7 (Link to the Two-Year Bible Reading Plan)

Philippians is often referred to as the Epistle of Joy. Paul sang songs of praise from the dungeons of Philipi (Acts 16:25-26) long before he wrote this letter. It seems appropriate that his letter to the Philippians, written from his imprisonment in Rome, would be filled with joy and praise. Paul declared that his chains served to advance the Gospel.

Ephesians

Those following the two-year Bible reading plan with me will begin reading the book of Ephesians tomorrow, October 1 (Link to the Two-Year Bible Reading Plan)

Paul wrote the book of Ephesians as a letter to the church in the city of Ephesus. You may remember from reading in Acts about the uproar over the loss of business by the silversmiths and idol makers as they accused Paul of going against the goddess Diana (AKA Artemis).

Paul’s letter to the Ephesians addressed God’s plan to bless the whole world, not the Jews alone. He challenged the church to use its gifts to be a light to the world. Paul addressed  Continue reading →

1 Kings

006-solomon-templeThose following the two-year Bible reading plan with me will begin reading the book of 1 Kings tomorrow, September 29 (Link to the Two-Year Bible Reading Plan)

The title of the book 1 Kings is a bit of a misnomer as this is the third book about the kings of Israel, but who am I to question this? LOL! The first two chapters of the book of 1 Kings is about the transition from dying King David to King Solomon with a few bumps in the road. It then continues through half of the book to tell of Solomon’s wisdom, great wealth and fame, and of the building of the great temple remembered as Solomon’s Temple. Solomon’s fame led to his downfall as his many wives led him to begin worshiping other gods. At Solomon’s death, the nation of Israel became divided as two of his sons claimed a throne, one of the northern kingdom of Israel and one of the southern kingdom of Judah.

Both the northern and southern kingdoms begin an up and down pattern of turning to false gods and returning to the true God. Elijah the prophet challenges King Ahab’s evil ways with great power. Elisha becomes the next prophet behind Elijah and continues his ministry when Elisha is taken into heaven.

Galatians

The book of Galatians is a letter that Paul wrote to the churches in the region that falls within Asia Minor or what we now know as Turkey. Cities in the region of Galatia include Pisidian Antioch, Iconium, Lystra, and Derbe which you may recall from reading Acts.
