Second Chronicles continues where 1 Chronicles ends with the refresher history lesson for the people of Israel after they returned from their many years in exile and after the fall of Jerusalem. Second Chronicles reports on Solomon and the kings of the southern kingdom of Judah following the line of David. It omits the kings of the northern kingdom of Israel. The first nine chapters are about Solomon and the building of the temple and his palace and his other activities and death. Continue reading →

1st, 2nd, and 3rd John

1 John 3,16Those following the two-year Bible reading plan with me will begin reading the books of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd John tomorrow, December 2. (Link to the Two-Year Bible Reading Plan)

In John’s first letter he focuses on ways Christ followers can be assured they belong to him. It includes examples of what obedience to Christ looks like and examples of false believers. I especially like 1 John 5:13 which says “I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.”  Continue reading →

1 & 2 Peter

1 Peter 3,15Those following the two-year Bible reading plan with me will begin reading the book of 1 Peter tomorrow, November 24, and 2 Peter on November 29. (Link to the Two-Year Bible Reading Plan)

The apostle Peter wrote First Peter to encourage the Christians who were suffering from persecution for their beliefs and new way of life and worship. Peter’s letter includes directions on how to conduct their lives in the situations in which these Christians may find themselves. He encourages them with Christ’s example of love for us.

Second Peter teaches Christians how to identify and respond to false teachers from inside the church. It also addresses the importance of personal spiritual growth, and the assurance that Christ Jesus will return.

James

James 3.5-6aThose following the two-year Bible reading plan with me will begin reading the book of James tomorrow, November 19. (Link to the Two-Year Bible Reading Plan)

James is one of my favorite books of the Bible. It is jam-packed with good advice for Christian living. The author is believed to be James, the half-brother of Jesus who initially didn’t believe Jesus was the son of God until after Jesus’ resurrection. James challenges Christians to put their faith to work with action.

First and Second Chronicles were originally written as one book, a refresher history lesson for the people of Israel after they returned from their many years in exile and after the fall of Jerusalem. These books emphasized the positive events of their history and omitted many negative events. They also include new information that was not included in 1&2 Samuel and 1&2 Kings.  Continue reading →
