Psalm 8 Standing in Awe of God’s Creation

If this video doesn’t put you in the spirit of praising God…

http://www.andiesisle.com/creation/magnificent.htm

I know a few people who have problems believing in a God who can’t be proven through scientific evidence. But they must acknowledge that God can’t be disproved through scientific evidence either. For anyone to say there is no God, they must be able to claim they have visited and exhausted every detail of matter and information that has ever existed.

Read Psalm 8. The world literally shouts with evidence of its Creator through its endless design and beauty. How could any thinking person truly believe that this just happened as if by accident? Accidents turn beauty into ugliness, not the reverse.

What is it that non-believers are afraid to let go of? Do they think they will be thought of as less intelligent if they acknowledge the existence of a Supreme Being? Do they fear God’s authority over them? Do they feel that by denying God’s existence they are exercising some kind of control over God?

Father God, your creation shouts your name from the highest mountain peak to the farthest star to the tiniest grain of pollen as seen through a microscope. Your love shouts to us from a blood stained cross and through the compassion of people you send to us. Your power shouts from the Grand Canyon which you carved with water, to the most powerful hurricane or volcano, or to a gentle breeze to cool us on a hot day. And it whispers to us from an empty tomb. But you never force us to believe – you only supply all the evidence we need and leave it up to us to choose. I pray for the hearts of those who are still resisting that they will be willing to see you as you truly are and come to love and worship you.

This Summer’s Must-Read Non-Fiction (book review by Kathryn Frazier)

His Whisperings Posted on June 17, 2011 by Janice D. GreenJune 17, 2011

My friend, Kathryn Frasier, just posted in her Facebook notes something I wish I had written. With her permission I am posting it here for my readers. What a great book for summer (or anytime) reading!

This Summer’s Must-Read Non-Fiction
(book review by Kathryn Frazier)

I just finished this summer’s must-read nonfiction: true stories of ordinary men and women of faith whose lives intertwined with abusive priests and religious hypocrites.

The book opens with a depressed woman, scorned because she does not live up to her culture’s expectation of womanhood. She flees to the house of God, and pours out her heart in prayer, only to endure a false accusation by the presiding priest. Unbeknown to her, this same priest has been covering up sexual promiscuity, abuse, and robbery among his congregation by the priests in his charge for years. In time, the woman gives her only child to him to raise as a son.

The child grows up surrounded by religious corruption. He believes that God will one day punish evil priests. He commits himself to following the truth of God’s word, and to dealing honestly with people. We feel his anger and frustration when he learns, as an old man, that his sons, both judges, take bribes.

The book isn’t just about the priesthood, though. It closely follows a handsome and charismatic religious leader called “The LORD’s Anointed”. A real crowd-pleaser. This guy employs a young musician to work for him. While the musician is unknown, all is well; but when he begins to gain notoriety, the leader develops an insane jealousy. He gauges his popularity by the chanting crowds, and begins to hate his employee, who goes on to marry the leader’s daughter, and forms a deep friendship with his son. The musician’s wife loves him; but their marriage eventually ends in divorce, because of her father’s hatred.

Not understanding what went wrong, the musician tries repeatedly to patch his relationship with his father-in-law. Each time they talk, the leader speaks words of contrition, cries, and asks forgiveness. He vows in the name of God to change. But, of course, he never does. Not only does The LORD’s Anointed harbor grudges, he attempts murder. We see more of this leader’s hypocrisy when he visits a medium to communicate with the dead, after a great show of denouncing occultism.

Along the way, we meet an intelligent, quick-thinking woman, who averts the slaughter of innocent people by defying her abusive husband. And that boy raised by the priests? He must work through more anger, and more sorrow, when he learns that The LORD’s Anointed is not such a great guy after all. He never quite gets over it.

This book will have you on the edge of your seat. You’ll get angry and cry and cheer, and I’ll just bet there will be at least one person in its pages that reminds you of someone you know. The best part is that, no matter the jargon of the religious hypocrites, and no matter the sins of the sincere followers, God alone is the ultimate hero.

So pull this book off your bookshelf, dust it off, and give it a read. You already own it. It’s 1st Samuel. You can find it in your Bible, or wherever Bibles are found.

Joyful Obedience

His Whisperings Posted on June 4, 2011 by Janice D. GreenJune 4, 2011

I began reading the book of Romans, a chapter a day, a few days ago. And what has repeatedly come to my mind as I read is the reality that the joy of knowing Christ is what makes it possible to live the Christian lifestyle.

Adam and Eve had only one rule. The fact that the fruit on that tree was forbidden made it all the more appealing to them and they caved in to the temptation.

Today we are no different from Adam and Eve. We bristle when we are told we can’t. It doesn’t matter what it is we can’t do, or if it is in our best interest or not. We seem to think that we should be free to do anything and everything that crosses our mind. If we are told we can’t do something, just like Adam and Eve it makes us all the more determined to do it.

Romans 7:7-11 explains that it was the law that opened our eyes to sin and influenced us to desire to do the very things that God hates. It is the same rebellion that existed in Adam and Eve.

God gave us rules to live by in the Bible because he wanted us to truly live. God knows exactly how we are wired and what makes us tick because he made us. This must be why he has been so patient with us when we rebel right in his face. But there are limits to his tolerance. Just as he sent Adam and Eve out of the Garden of Eden, there will be a day of judgement for us. God will not allow sin to enter the Kingdom of Heaven.

Even though our natural bent is to break his rules and do things our own way, God gave us a way out – a way to break the curse of sin. He gave us the gift of his Son, Jesus. If we are willing to really look at Jesus through the eyes of God’s Word, we will discover how much God really loves us. When we recognize our sin for what it really is – rebellion against God – and accept what Jesus endured to make his life sacrifice for our sins, our hearts are changed from the inside out filling our hearts with gratitude and making it a joy to obey God’s rules. We recognize that God’s rules are there to help us, not to bar us from doing what we want to do.

I’m not claiming it is an easy path to follow, even after you accept Jesus’ sacrifice for your sins. The Apostle Paul continued to struggle with sin issues. See Romans 7:14-25. But the joy of knowing Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit was there helping him through his struggles – the kind that most of us will never have to endure.

Who would you rather serve? Someone you love or someone you hate? Joyful obedience starts with loving God and his Son, Jesus. Until that happens you will struggle to follow his rules.

Father God, thank you for being so patient with us. Thank you for the many people who have willingly given their lives that we might have your Word and that we might truly know you as you wish to be known. Give us hearts that want to accept you for who you are, hearts and hands that want to serve you joyfully.

Romans 5:1-5 Rejoice in sufferings???

His Whisperings Posted on May 28, 2011 by Janice D. GreenMay 28, 2011

I’ve been encouraged by several posts I read on Facebook recently from people who are applying the principle of rejoicing in their sufferings. It goes against the grain of our human nature doesn’t it? It is so much easier to ask “Why me” and to get angry over our losses.

People are hurting all over the US from tornadoes and flooding. I’ve been blessed to witness the recent disasters only on my computer screen (I don’t watch TV) and not in my family, though my daughter had a close brush with losing her home to fire. We who have escaped the tragedies need to find ways to reach out to them with assistance.

This morning I was reading Romans 5 and came across the scripture that encourages us to rejoice in our sufferings. (Click here to read Romans 5:1-3. Choose your own translation.) If we have faith to believe that God made us, and that he loves us and forgives our sins, then we can trust him with our sufferings and struggles. God uses these difficulties to produce perseverance, character, and hope in our lives. Through it we are better prepared for service to others in this life, and our rewards in heaven will be all the more glorious.

When I go through tough times, financial, emotional, sickness, or ________ (fill in the blank) my prayer is always “God, please don’t let this suffering be wasted. Help me to grow through it to prepare myself for better service in Your Kingdom.” I suppose my prayer has still been a little short of rejoicing in my suffering.

When I need help in rejoicing I look to Christian songs and choruses. I dealt with some negative feelings recently by singing as I worked. And it helped to lift my spirits.

Matthew 24:36 No one knows

His Whisperings Posted on May 19, 2011 by Janice D. GreenMay 19, 2011

Whenever I hear of any pastor or religious guru proclaiming the date of the end of the world I am persuaded that he/she is deceived and is not grounded in the Scriptures. Matthew 24:36 clearly states that no one knows the day or the hour when Jesus will return. Jesus said the angels didn’t know and that he, himself wasn’t privy to that information either. Only God knows when that day will come.

It never hurts to remember that Jesus is coming again. It is also worth noting that many events happening around the globe lead many Christians to believe that the time is near. One thing is certain – every day brings us one day closer. But we must be on guard against letting others deceive us into believing that they have prior knowledge of such things. They are only proclaiming their ignorance of God’s word.

Get a good night’s sleep Friday night (May 20, 2011) and Saturday night (May 21) and . . . Put your trust in Jesus and you can look forward to his coming with joyful expectation and not with fear.
