Keeping Christ in Christmas

His Whisperings Posted on December 3, 2011 by Janice D. GreenDecember 3, 2011

Cover of The First Christmas - coloring Bible quilt pagesAdvent is a special time of year as we each look forward to Christmas in our own ways. Some decorate with gusto while other shop ’til they drop. Some bake cookies, fruitcakes, and candy to give to friends. Some will use Advent calendars to count the days. Many attempt to do several or all of the above. I’m afraid that would wear me out!

I believe it is beneficial to analyse our activities to see which honor the Christ Child and which are only founded in traditions or worse in other people’s expectations on us. I would encourage my readers to seek traditions that will reinforce the reason why we celebrate Christmas in the first place.

Wouldn’t it help to read short passages from the Bible that give a portion of the Christmas story and read it a little at a time as we anticipate Christmas day? The Bible Quilts blog has a collection of Bible based Christmas pictures designed for making a Christmas quilt or a Christmas tree skirt. This activity could be stretched out over the days before Christmas as families read the Bible passages, trace the pictures on the fabric and the children color them. Sewing can be kept to a minimum by tracing and coloring directly onto a white cotton tree skirt.

Perhaps you can find other ways to keep Christ at the center of our Advent season activities. Please share what you do with your family to focus on the Christ Child.

Joy in Obedience by Jill Roman Lord

His Whisperings Posted on October 14, 2011 by Janice D. GreenOctober 14, 2011

Jill Roman Lord, inspired by her experience with her new puppy, has written a guest post for us today on the joys of learning obedience.

PoppieJoy in Obedience
By Jill Roman Lord

She runs, she jumps, she nips. She stands when I say “sit”, she jumps when I say “Down” and she runs away when I say “Come.” Yes, We have a new puppy named Poppie. We have a lot of training ahead and she has a lot of learning that must occur in order for us to build a solid relationship.

After a fruitless training session of struggling to get her to obey my commands, I began thinking that I am a lot like Poppie How often do I jump up to tend to chores, when God says, “Come sit with me awhile?” How often do I get distracted when God says, “Dig into My Word”?  How often do I find other things to do when God says, “Spend time with your children”?

I long for Poppie to know my voice and obey my commands so that we may fully enjoy each other’s company. In order for this to happen, we must spend time together to get to know each other and for trust to grow. She must learn that I will take care of her and guide her on the best path for her life.  I must train her so that I can trust her to obey my commands every time. When she obeys my commands, I’ll give her more freedom. If I know she’ll ring the bells by the door when she needs to go out, I’ll expand her territory outside of the kitchen. If I know she’ll come when she’s called I’ll let her off her leash to play fetch. Though Poppy doesn’t always know the reasons I give her commands, it is still her duty to perform them without balking. She must learn there is joy in obedience and pleasure in the master’s plan.

We are a lot like Poppy in our relationship with our Master. We must spend time with God to get to know Him. We must read His Word to learn His ways. As our relationship deepens, our trust will grow. We learn to trust that He wants the best for us and will guide us on the right path. When we obey, He opens more doors for us, expanding our territory. As parents or grandparents, we trust that He has called us to not only love our children but teach them to know and love the One True Master so they may obey His plan for their lives, as well.

When we spend time reading God’s Word with our children, they too will understand Who He is. When we pray with and for our children they learn to pray on their own. If we spend time in the Word ourselves, our children will see that it is important to us. It is important that we act on and obey what we feel God is leading us to do, so our children will observe our obedience. Sometimes we don’t understand God’s direction, His timing, or His plan, but we must strive to do what we know we’ve been commanded to do. When we obey, we see the fruits of our obedience – the fruits of seeing our children love and obey God’s commands. Together we will discover the joy in obedience and the pleasure in the Master’s Plan.

New Beginnings

His Whisperings Posted on August 22, 2011 by Janice D. GreenAugust 22, 2011

Kayla Wallace ready for her first day of preschool

As I read the posts of so many of my Facebook friends I keep seeing “first day of school” or “first day of college” again and again. How exciting it is when we go through a new door – exciting and apprehensive at the same time. Will I make new friends? Will people like me? Will I be able to keep up with all my classes? Yet the excitement and anticipation of the moment keep us optimistic as we move forward.

I too am going through a new door. My copies of The Creation are scheduled to arrive at my doorstep tomorrow. I’ve never tried to seriously market a book before, though I have written a few with and for my family. This time, the intent is to sell as many copies as I can. I have 700 copies being delivered to me and 1500 copies to STL Distribution for marketing in the Christian and general bookstores. Questions abound: Will I be able to sell all these copies? Will people invite me to speak at their women’s groups, churches, and schools? Will I have problems trying to market this book and getting another book ready to publish at the same time?

I find if I dwell on these questions too much I only make myself unproductive. But if I keep my eyes on Jesus, he will keep me strong and enable me to do the tasks ahead of me. I am reminded of the scripture, that says I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. (Philippians 4:13) It also helps to recall the many blessings along the way that got me to this point – all evidences of his hand on me and this project. First-day students can also think of the stepping stones that got them to this point in their lives and take courage that the same God who brought them to this point is able to help them to reach the finish line.

This song has been a great encouragement to me whenever I feel apprehensive. Enjoy this YouTube presentation of it: He Didn’t Bring Us This Far to Leave Us.

Heavenly Father who watches over me, help me to relax in your strength. Guide me in the days ahead so that I can be productive for your sake. Be with your children of all ages who are entering new phases in their lives – school, college, or employment – and enable them to see your hand guiding them along the way. Help them (and me) to stay close to you and walk in the strength that only you can provide.

Unleavened Bread

His Whisperings Posted on July 8, 2011 by Janice D. GreenJuly 8, 2011

Exodus 12:1-30 The first Passover

Unleavened Bread

Unleavened bread - not Kosher, but as close as I could come to how I think the Israelites might have made it the night of the first passover.

I am getting ready for Bible school. The lesson for the first day is about the first Passover and includes making fake unleavened bread with some homemade play dough. Since my husband and I enjoy not only making bread, but grinding our own grain, I have decided to give real unleavened bread a try. I found a recipe online and am making some modifications, which in my opinion make it more authentic. I believe their “simple recipe” makes the dough more like our modern biscuits only without baking soda or powder.

Actually, I’m looking for the middle ground between their simplified recipe and their most strict Jewish recipe. I can’t imagine the people following all the strict procedures of the Jewish Kosher codes that are now taught. The idea in making unleavened bread was two-fold as I see it. First, it was to be able to make it very quickly. To follow the strict Kosher standards would not have been quick. Actually, those standards did not exist at the time of the first Passover.

The second reason for unleavened bread was to get rid of the old yeast. Not only were they to make the bread without yeast, they were not to bring any old yeast with them when they left Egypt.  I can relate. I used to make the potato flake sourdough bread until I got tired of it and became slack in maintaining my starter. I soon found out what bad yeast was like. It made huge holes in the bread and wouldn’t raise properly. I was no longer able to make sourdough bread even after I poured out all my starter, thoroughly cleaned and scalded my utensils, and got new starter from a friend. It is nearly impossible to get rid of bad yeast. My only alternative was to return to using store bought yeast in all my bread recipes.

Unleavened bread

Second recipe for unleavened bread is much better.

(Revision time: I tried approaching the bread-making like a loaf instead of like biscuits as I had in the first try and am much happier with it. I used more liquid and added the flour last instead of the water. I also used 1/2 whole grain flour I ground myself and 1/2 store-bought bread flour. I made this recipe for use in communion for Bible school which is why I cut it into one-inch squares.)

Unleavened Bread (Revision – preferred by my husband and me)

1 cup cold water
1 egg or 2 egg yolks
1/2 cup honey (2 tablespoons)
3 Tablespoons butter (2 1/4 tsp)
2 Tablespoons oil (1 1/2 tsp)
1 1/2 tsp. salt (3/8 tsp.)
approximately 5 cups whole wheat flour (1 c.) (We will grind our own)

Place all ingredients except the flour in a mixing bowl and blend thoroughly. Add three cups of flour and mix well with mixer. If you have a dough hook, attach it in place of the standard beaters and continue adding flour. If you don’t have a dough hook, stir in the remaining flour, a little at a time, with a wooden spoon. You have added enough flour when the dough leaves the sides of the bowl and follows the spoon or the dough hook. Then knead the bread until it becomes elastic.

Oil your hands and two large baking sheets. Shape the dough into two balls and put one on each baking sheet. Flatten each ball out with your hands, followed by an oiled rolling pin until it is 1/4 inch thick.

Using a pizza cutter or a long sharp knife, make cuts across the dough in both directions making 1 inch squares. Then take an oiled toothpick and poke one or two holes in each square.

Bake at 400 degrees F until edges begin to turn brown. The type of baking sheet influences baking time considerably, so watch it closely. It takes about 9-12 minutes or longer on a baking stone that isn’t pre-heated.

Unleavened Bread – Simple Recipe (1/4 recipe in parenthesis)

4 cups whole wheat flour (1 c.) (We will grind our own)
1 1/2 tsp. salt (3/8 tsp.)
3 Tablespoons butter (2 1/4 tsp)
2 Tablespoons oil (1 1/2 tsp)
1/2 cup honey (2 tablespoons)
up to 1/2 cup cold water a few drops at a time (2 tablespoons)

Mix the flour and salt in wide bottomed bowl. Cut in butter, then add oil and honey. Mix very well until ingredients are evenly distributed – will be crumbly. Add water a little at a time, and only enough to form a dough. Knead dough well in bowl. (I used the wide bowl my husband’s grandmother used to make biscuits in.) Pull enough dough to make a plum-sized ball in the palm of your hand. Knead dough several times and then use a rolling pin on a lightly oiled cutting board to roll it out to look like a large cookie 1/4″ thick. Pierce it with a fork all over each piece. Bake in a hot oven, 400 degrees F about 8-11 minutes until edges brown lightly.

Unleavened Bread before baking

Here is how it looked before going into the oven.

The bread is delicious to me – a person who loves whole grain bread. It looks and tastes like cookies but not as sweet.

I encourage my readers to read the article I found on how Kosher unleavened bread is made and the reasons behind the things they do.

Here are three more recipes I found: http://www.best-bread-recipes.com/recipe-unleavened-bread.html

And here is another web page chock full of unleavened bread recipes: http://www.intercontinentalcog.org/unleavenedbread_index.php

1 Samuel 16:7 God looks at the heart

His Whisperings Posted on July 2, 2011 by Janice D. GreenJuly 2, 2011
Seek Him in God's Word

If you seek me you shall find me if you seek with all your heart.

Read 1 Samuel 16:1-13 Click on this link to read the passage. You may select your preferred version of the Bible after the link opens.

Young David was knowingly overlooked by his father, Jesse, as he rounded up his sons to come to the sacrifice Samuel had prepared. Samuel had come to anoint one of Jesse’s sons as the next king of Israel. Samuel was perplexed that God had not chosen one of these fine young sons. But God told Samuel that he does not look at people in the same way we do. Instead, God looks at the heart.

Jesse then admitted that he had in fact one more son and called for him to come to Samuel. Jessie had brought his valued sons but left the youngest to spend the day as he did every day to guard the flock of dirty noisy sheep. When David was brought to Samuel, God told Samuel this was the one he had chosen to be king.

We all know the outcome of this story. Though it was many years before David actually became king, he was often referred to as the man after God’s own heart.

What is your heart condition? What does God see when he looks into your heart? He can see what no one else can see. He knows the secret thoughts that you won’t share with your most intimate friends.

And he knows how you think of him – how often, how deeply, and for what motives. He knows whether you are seeking to know him better or if you only seek him when you want physical blessings to make your life easier. He knows if you truly want to learn what pleases him or whether you want to pick and choose what to believe as if you would instruct him on how he should have written the Scriptures.

If reading this causes you concern over a personal heart problem, the prescription is to spend more time in the Bible and in prayer. I find a heart of gratitude is the best defense against heart problems. So if you are weak in that area you might begin by reading the book of John or the Easter week passages in the other three gospels.

God has given us a promise that I value very highly: If you seek me you will find me if you seek with all your heart. (Jeremiah 29:13) Click here for a beautiful choir rendition of this verse.

Father God, teach us to seek you with all our hearts. Teach us what it means to truly put you first. Enable us to make that the first priority in our lives. It is so hard to shut off the world and quiet our hearts when we seek you. Thank you that you are on our side, ready to help us if we are only willing to give you that chance.
