Phil 1:6 He’s still working on me

His Whisperings Posted on May 16, 2011 by Janice D. GreenMay 16, 2011

Children are prone to mess up over and over on one thing or another. It’s just a part of growing up. Messy rooms, messy eating, telling stories… Young moms can probably name these faster than I can think of them now that my daughter has children of her own.

How critical should we be with our children when we believe we have told them often enough but they still can’t seem to remember? They keep making the same mistakes. As parents, it is our job to teach them proper behavior.

Let’s change the focus for a moment… What do we do that constantly irritates our spouse or an employer? Have we arrived at the place where we have it all together and live in perfect harmony with the world around us? Probably not. I still can’t always remember to cut off the lights when I leave a room. I still find myself harboring bitterness over offences I should have forgiven.

Philippians 1:6 tells us that God will continue the work he began in us until he completes it – in the day of Christ Jesus. It seems obvious to me that it takes a lifetime for this to be completed. I personally find comfort in this. God is working in my life to sand the rough places smooth, and some spots are rougher than others. We need to be patient both with ourselves and with others, especially our children, as we work through the rough spots in our lives.

Be transparent with your children. If something is difficult for you and it bothers you, let your children know that you sometimes struggle too. Let them see how God is working in your life to make you more like him. It may help them overcome self doubts when they feel like failures because of repeated mistakes. Let them know that God is working with them too.

There is a song that clearly reflects this scripture verse called “He’s Still Working on Me.” Teach it to your child and sing the chorus often when repeated mistakes start to get you down. The video is cute and funny, but watch it yourself before deciding to share it with your children. You might not want to give them any bad ideas.

God is Able

His Whisperings Posted on April 29, 2011 by Janice D. GreenApril 29, 2011

While driving today I heard the following song on the radio and it brought back memories of a time when my future was spiraling out of control. I remembered hearing the song “He is Able” in a worship service and how it helped me to cling to the hope that only God could give me at that fearful time.

I can only imagine the worries of the thousands who have lost their homes in the recent tornadoes that left their many paths of destruction across the United States this April. Perhaps this song will bring some encouragement to them as well.

He is Able (click and receive a blessing)

At the risk of sounding trite I wish to offer that same hope to the many who are struggling with this disaster – or with other disasters that may have come into the paths of my readers. God IS able.

God is in control of what happens. He doesn’t will pain and hardship in our lives, but he uses the pain and hardship that comes our way to make us strong.

Life on earth is not about us, nor is it about today or tomorrow. Life on earth is but a breath in comparison with eternity. The purpose of life is to give us the opportunity to develop a relationship with the very God who created us, that same God who gave his Son Jesus to us to suffer at our own hands and to die a wretched death on a cross to carry our sin debt to the grave in our place, the same God who wants to share eternity with us in heaven.

If we look at God as the Master Magician who will fix all our problems and circumstances and make life easier for us, we are missing the point. On the other hand, God wants us to prosper, to have a hope and a future. (Jeremiah 29:11) If we will choose to follow his plan for our lives, to choose to grow through our circumstances instead of fighting them, to put growing in our relationship to God above fixing our circumstances, then we will overcome any and all obstacles on God’s timetable.

I suppose this is easier for me to see as a senior citizen. When I was young I thought of all those years ahead of me. Looking back I think of much wasted time and effort when I tried to manipulate and fix my circumstances. Even when I looked to Jesus, I was looking for my “fix” more than my relationship. This is not an easy lesson to learn, but I am convinced that learning it is what life is all about.

Dare to witness the crucifixion

His Whisperings Posted on April 22, 2011 by Janice D. GreenJanuary 2, 2020

Crucif15I get squeamish when I see people get injured. I rarely watch television because so many programs are like a feeding frenzy of this type. The crucifixion is but one more example of how I have shied away from looking too closely. I was too much of a coward to watch the movie, The Passion of the Christ, until it was shown at my church last year at one of the events I never miss, so I watched it. Even so, I feel a certain sense of amnesia about having seen it, something akin to the amnesia I have about an accident I was in once.

One evening during choir practice as the Lenten season approached this year I felt the Holy Spirit calling me to look more closely at the crucifixion. At first it came in what seemed like a verbal prompting for me to “Look at the ground under the cross,” and “Feel the rough wood.” I could handle that much as I tried to imagine the scene, to hear the birds, and to smell the air.

On April 1 I was challenged through a web page to read the book of John, one chapter a day. It was an exciting way to prepare myself to experience anew the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ. It gave me a step by step approach to look more closely.

Our choir sings some exceptionally powerful anthems every year. While practicing a couple of days ago I saw the blood more clearly than before. I saw it fall on the same ground that the Spirit had led me to look at a few weeks earlier. I saw the blood dripping down the rough cross and soaking into the wood. And I realized how that blood must have soaked the royal robe Pilate had commanded the soldiers to put on him after they gave him the lashings which tore up his back.

When we look closely we are better prepared to appreciate the price Jesus paid to bear the punishment for our sin on our behalf. He loved me that much, yet I hadn’t even been born yet. Not only did “this man” Jesus do this for me, this “Son of God” left his throne and riches in Heaven to come down and live as a man, to be born in a stable, to endure the human experiences of being sought out for all the wrong reasons, being loved by some and ridiculed and hated by others, and finally crucified because the chief priests were envious of his popularity among the common people.

Thankfully, we don’t have to keep on looking at the cross. We don’t have to labor there on and on, because Sunday is coming…  When God shows his power for all time!

Were you there?

His Whisperings Posted on April 10, 2011 by Janice D. GreenApril 10, 2011

The words of a Negro Spiritual I learned as a youth go “Were you there when they crucified my Lord?” The song describes the cruelty Jesus encountered step by step when he was crucified.

It isn’t easy to truly think about the crucifixion in detail. We like the cleaned up versions found in children’s storybooks better than reality. Somewhere in my recent activities it occurred to me that I needed to spend more time in the presence of that sacred moment when Jesus offered himself as our blood sacrifice. I needed to feel the sand and soil that held the cross upright. I needed to feel the rough wood of the cross. And then I needed to lift my eyes and look at the bruised and beaten body of Jesus who stayed on that cross because he loved me. He had all the power necessary to free himself and leave mankind to fend for their own sins forever, but his love kept him there.

Are you willing to look at Jesus on the cross and make it truly a personal experience? It isn’t easy, but it is necessary if you are to fully appreciate his sacrificial love for you.

I can’t leave you here because this video is too depressing to watch unless we recall the last verse which was omitted from this video – “Were you there when he rose up from the grave?” Don’t forget, Sunday’s coming with all its glory and victory!

Dying to Self

His Whisperings Posted on April 2, 2011 by Janice D. GreenApril 2, 2011

Adam and Eve were created to live forever.

Because they chose self – to go their own way, they had to die. All of mankind has followed in the footprints of Adam and Eve, choosing to go their own way. Some turn back to their Creator, but not all.

Our mission in life is to learn to die to self and learn to give control of our lives back to God so we can live with him forever.

Father God, help us learn to release control of our lives to you day by day.

Genesis 3
