It was an experiment…

His Whisperings Posted on March 22, 2014 by Janice D. GreenMarch 22, 2014

I have decided to abandon my project of trying to blog on the Daily Bible Study scriptures for several reasons:

  • It is too demanding to do this every day, as it pulls me away from other tasks that need my attention.
  • The schedule defines what I must post about. When I have something I want to share that doesn’t fit the schedule there is no place for it.
  • It weighs me down. I’m no expert on whatever part of the Bible pops up on any given day and to think that I will come up with something profound to say every day is ludicrous.

I’m looking forward to a writing workshop next week in Pennsylvania sponsored by the Highlights Foundation. The theme of this workshop is “Sharing Our Hope: Writing for religious and inspirational markets.” Who knows what direction I will go from there, but I am certainly excited about the opportunity!

Worshiping the Shepherd, the Lamb – Revelation 7:13-17

His Whisperings Posted on March 22, 2014 by Janice D. GreenMarch 22, 2014

Revelation 7:13-17

http://hiswhisperings.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Revelation-713-17.mp3

13 Then one of the twenty-four elders asked me, “Who are these who are clothed in white? Where did they come from?”

14 And I said to him, “Sir, you are the one who knows.”

Then he said to me, “These are the ones who died in[a] the great tribulation.[b] They have washed their robes in the blood of the Lamb and made them white.

15 “That is why they stand in front of God’s throne
and serve him day and night in his Temple.
And he who sits on the throne
will give them shelter.
16 They will never again be hungry or thirsty;
they will never be scorched by the heat of the sun.
17 For the Lamb on the throne[c]
will be their Shepherd.
He will lead them to springs of life-giving water.
And God will wipe every tear from their eyes.”

–Revelation 7:13-17 (NLT)

How might worship be different at the end of the age than it is for us today? I read about the angels and these who are clothed in white praising God day and night and wonder. We get restless sitting in our pews for an hour and struggle with dozing off.

Consider the elders answer to who these dressed in white were – those who died during the tribulation, the ones who have been through the worst scenario of all times yet held tight to their faith in God. They understand fully what it means to trust in God and to find deliverance. How do our struggles compare with what has been promised for the tribulation? Like a drop in a bucket maybe?

Maybe our faltering worship attempts are the result of our persistence in staying in our comfort zones and not stepping out in faith in areas where we must put our trust in God.

Our Shepherd is forever faithful to us. May we be faithful to him with a heart of continual thanksgiving and praise.

A preview into being in God’s presence – Revelation 7:9-12

Revelation 7:9-12

Praise from the Great Crowd

9 After this I saw a vast crowd, too great to count, from every nation and tribe and people and language, standing in front of the throne and before the Lamb. They were clothed in white robes and held palm branches in their hands.10 And they were shouting with a great roar,

“Salvation comes from our God who sits on the throne
and from the Lamb!”

11 And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living beings. And they fell before the throne with their faces to the ground and worshiped God. 12 They sang,

“Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom
and thanksgiving and honor
and power and strength belong to our God
forever and ever! Amen.”

—Revelation 7:9-12 (NLT)

(Okay, maybe it would have been better if I’d stuck to reading the last four lines, but that’s what I did when I read library books to my students. It’s hard to break old habits. 😉 )

It is embarrassing to even try to enact what it might be like to come into the presence of the Holy God. If the truth be known, my voice would probably completely leave me as I tried to mouth the words – a situation I’ve experienced a time or two when I was overcome with joy while singing in a choir or congregation.

What can be added to these verses? nothing significant… Just read them through enough times as you attempt to feel something of what it might be like to be present on that day – because that day will come.

Day of Wrath – Revelation 6:12-17

His Whisperings Posted on March 20, 2014 by Janice D. GreenMarch 20, 2014

Revelation 6:12-17

http://hiswhisperings.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Revelation-612-17.mp3

12 I watched as the Lamb broke the sixth seal, and there was a great earthquake. The sun became as dark as black cloth, and the moon became as red as blood. 13 Then the stars of the sky fell to the earth like green figs falling from a tree shaken by a strong wind. 14 The sky was rolled up like a scroll, and all of the mountains and islands were moved from their places.

15 Then everyone—the kings of the earth, the rulers, the generals, the wealthy, the powerful, and every slave and free person—all hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains. 16 And they cried to the mountains and the rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of the one who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb.17 For the great day of their wrath has come, and who is able to survive?”

–Revelation 6:12-17 (NLT)

I don’t like to dwell on “hell fire and brimstone” topics because so many use them in the wrong way – to scare people into believing in God. Likewise I didn’t pick this scripture out for today, it is simply next in the “Uniform Series” that is used by so many different denominations.

But I don’t have to apologize for it either. God saw fit to include it in his Word. So here it is… What do we do with it?

It is no coincidence that it is at the back of the book – like the end of any good book, it tells the end of the story. We may not like how it ends, but maybe that’s why we aren’t God – nor should we want to be.

There is a continuous story that begins in Genesis and ends in Revelation that tells how God has sought to reveal himself to man, beginning with face-to-face revelation with Adam and Eve (who blew that for us all), then through many special leaders and prophets, and ultimately through Christ Jesus, his Son.

God is willing to put up with man’s rejection only so long. He has shown us a better way and is giving us these thousands of years to get it and to embrace it. But the time is coming when he is going to wipe out those who insist on messing it all up. Then he will repair the damage and will bring heaven on earth. Oh glorious day!!!

Who/what do we look to for direction? Zechariah 10:1-5

His Whisperings Posted on March 19, 2014 by Janice D. GreenMarch 20, 2014

Who or what do we look to for help? We have options, but there is one that is way superior to the rest, while others are totally wrong…

Zechariah 10:1-5

http://hiswhisperings.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Zechariah-101-5.mp3

The Lord Will Restore His People

1 Ask the Lord for rain in the spring,
for he makes the storm clouds.
And he will send showers of rain
so every field becomes a lush pasture.
2 Household gods give worthless advice,
    fortune-tellers predict only lies,
and interpreters of dreams pronounce
    falsehoods that give no comfort.
So my people are wandering like lost sheep;
they are attacked because they have no shepherd.

3 “My anger burns against your shepherds,
and I will punish these leaders.[a]
For the Lord of Heaven’s Armies has arrived
to look after Judah, his flock.
He will make them strong and glorious,
like a proud warhorse in battle.
4 From Judah will come the cornerstone,
    the tent peg,
the bow for battle,
    and all the rulers.
5 They will be like mighty warriors in battle,
trampling their enemies in the mud under their feet.
Since the Lord is with them as they fight,
they will overthrow even the enemy’s horsemen.

–Zechariah 10:1-5 (NLT)

I went through a desperate time in my life before I really got to know what the Bible said about much of anything, let alone occult practices when I faithfully read the horoscopes and dabbled in other such activities. And following them I made some mega-mistakes. Now that I’ve recognized the true value of studying God’s Word, I’ve discovered that it was seriously against God’s teachings. My conclusion is that if you go to horoscopes for direction you are asking Satan himself for advice.

God has given us his Word for direction. It is our manual, our guidebook, and our email from God himself. What more do we need? Pastors and Christian friends can help us to understand it better and more quickly, so they can be valuable resources as well, but the bottom line is God’s Word. If you read it for yourself, you will grow in your ability to discern God’s will and direction for your life.

Father God, give us an ever growing hunger to know your Word, and make us willing to apply it to our lives every day.
