National Day of Prayer – Matthew 6:9-13

His Whisperings Posted on May 1, 2014 by Janice D. GreenMay 1, 2014

7193704_s praying togetherThe Scripture reading for today from the Uniform Series curriculum is Matthew 6:9-13. You will recognize it as The Lord’s Prayer. If you click on the link you can see how this prayer has been translated by several different translations of the Bible.

I don’t believe it is a coincidence that this was the Scripture for today. I would like to use the opportunity this blog offers to remind people that it is a day set aside by our government (USA) to pray for our nation.

Rather than write a lot of words in this post, I prefer to simply write The Lord’s Prayer with lots of space between the sections to remind you to pause, and using each part of the Lord’s Prayer as an example, pray for our nation and the people in it – that includes your own family and neighbors as well, but don’t forget our nation’s leaders.

Let us pray:

Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts (trespasses/sins)

as we forgive our debtors (those who trespass/sin against us).

And lead us not into temptation

but deliver us from evil

For thine is the Kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever

Amen

Daily Bible Study – April 28-May 4, 201

His Whisperings Posted on April 28, 2014 by Janice D. GreenApril 28, 2014

7752233_sI like reading Bible passages that will complement the Sunday school lesson so will post links to those passages here to make it easier to find them each morning. These passages are based on the International Sunday School Lessons for Christian Teaching, copyright 2010 by the Committee on the Uniform Series. Many denominations develop their Sunday school curriculum around this selection of Bible passages.

The following passages are for this week. By posting them in advance with links I can make it easier to locate them each morning both for myself and for others. I may or not post on one or more of them through the week. I am learning that I must first feed myself. I’m not up to daily posting on any of my blogs.

April 28 – Deuteronomy 8:1-11

April 29 – Matthew 26:36-41

April 30 – Galatians 6:1-5

May 1 – Matthew 6:9-13

May 2 – Revelation 3:8-13

May 3 – Psalm 91:1-12

May 4 – Deuteronomy 6:13-16; Matthew 4:4-11

God bless you as you spend time in God’s Word and in prayer this week.

Jesus, the Passover Lamb – Mark 14:12-25

His Whisperings Posted on April 17, 2014 by Janice D. GreenApril 17, 2014

8037891_s Jesus communionJesus ate his last meal with his Disciples. It wasn’t just any meal, it was the Passover meal. The Disciples were still unaware that this would be their last meal together. Jesus would soon be carried away and nailed to the cross.

It was no coincidence that these events happened on this night, for just as the blood of the Passover lamb was used to protect the firstborn that night in Egypt hundreds of years earlier, the blood of Jesus, our Passover Lamb, saves us from our sins making God’s forgiveness possible.

Read about The Last Supper in Mark 14:12-25:

12 On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb is sacrificed, Jesus’ disciples asked him, “Where do you want us to go to prepare the Passover meal for you?”

13 So Jesus sent two of them into Jerusalem with these instructions: “As you go into the city, a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you. Follow him.14 At the house he enters, say to the owner, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room where I can eat the Passover meal with my disciples?’ 15 He will take you upstairs to a large room that is already set up. That is where you should prepare our meal.”16 So the two disciples went into the city and found everything just as Jesus had said, and they prepared the Passover meal there.

17 In the evening Jesus arrived with the twelve disciples. 18 As they were at the table eating, Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, one of you eating with me here will betray me.”

19 Greatly distressed, each one asked in turn, “Am I the one?”

20 He replied, “It is one of you twelve who is eating from this bowl with me.21 For the Son of Man must die, as the Scriptures declared long ago. But how terrible it will be for the one who betrays him. It would be far better for that man if he had never been born!”

22 As they were eating, Jesus took some bread and blessed it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, “Take it, for this is my body.”

23 And he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. He gave it to them, and they all drank from it. 24 And he said to them, “This is my blood, which confirms the covenant between God and his people. It is poured out as a sacrifice for many.25 I tell you the truth, I will not drink wine again until the day I drink it new in the Kingdom of God.

–Mark 14:12-25 (NLT)

Jesus modeled communion for the Disciples and for all Christians from that time forward. Communion offers us a time to pause and reflect on what it cost for Christ Jesus to bring us salvation.

Most of my readers have probably shared in communion many times in their lifetimes. There may be merit in trying to observe it through the Disciples five senses on this first communion experience. Jesus broke the bread and shared it with each of them. This is my body broken for you… eat it in remembrance of me. Imagine what must have gone through the Disciples minds as they perhaps hesitantly put the bread in their mouths. And then he gave them the wine. This is my blood poured out for you… drink it in remembrance of me. That would have been harder for me on that first communion. Would it taste like blood?

Jesus was still in their presence. What did the Disciples understand that night? When would it all come together for them so that it would become a joyful time of remembrance of the time Jesus walked with them?

This post is a little long… It was a long night for Jesus as well. I haven’t even touched on that.

Palm Sunday from two perspectives

His Whisperings Posted on April 13, 2014 by Janice D. GreenMay 8, 2014

Every year we celebrate Palm Sunday in our worship services and celebrate with the people in the Bible – The Messiah is here! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! But what were the people really thinking? Why did Jesus weep?

The common people’s view:

5040034_s Crucifixion modifiedThe people were looking for Jesus to come to Jerusalem. Their hero – healer of diseases who can feed thousands with only a few loaves of bread and fish – he would surely break the oppression from the Roman government in time. Here is the grand welcome the people had for Jesus:

8 Many in the crowd spread their garments on the road ahead of him, and others spread leafy branches they had cut in the fields. 9 Jesus was in the center of the procession, and the people all around him were shouting,

“Praise God![a]
Blessings on the one who comes in the name of the Lord!
10 Blessings on the coming Kingdom of our ancestor David!
    Praise God in highest heaven!”[b]

11 So Jesus came to Jerusalem and went into the Temple. After looking around carefully at everything, he left because it was late in the afternoon. Then he returned to Bethany with the twelve disciples.

–Mark 11:8-11 (NLT)

But Jesus’ wept:

As Jesus approached Jerusalem he wept. They were not tears for himself – for the beating he would have to endure and his crucifixion on the cross. They were tears for the people of Jerusalem. Tears for what was to become of them and of their city because they would not accept the salvation God was offering them through Jesus his Son. Read it here:

41 But as he came closer to Jerusalem and saw the city ahead, he began to weep. 42 “How I wish today that you of all people would understand the way to peace. But now it is too late, and peace is hidden from your eyes. 43 Before long your enemies will build ramparts against your walls and encircle you and close in on you from every side. 44 They will crush you into the ground, and your children with you. Your enemies will not leave a single stone in place, because you did not accept your opportunity for salvation.”

–Luke 19:41-48 (NLT)

Where are you in this picture? Are you looking for the true salvation Jesus has to offer? Or are you looking only for miracles and comfort? Don’t sell yourself short.
