Mark 1:14-15 Repent and believe the good news

His Whisperings Posted on February 5, 2008 by Janice D. GreenFebruary 5, 2008

     14 After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. 15 “The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news!” Mark 1:14-15 (NIV)

     In the Gospel according to Mark, this passage comes immediately after the baptism of Jesus. The time for his ministry had come. He would soon call his Twelve Disciples.

     So what were the two components of Jesus’ ministry, right from the very beginning? Repent and believe. God had been saying this to mankind from the very beginning, but now there is much more to come–the good news! The good news of forgiveness and salvation. Don’t miss it.

     Dear Lord, prepare our hearts for true repentance that we may believe fully and receive all that you have to offer.

Luke 3:7-14 Stop sinning and do right

His Whisperings Posted on February 4, 2008 by Janice D. GreenFebruary 4, 2008

     7  John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? 8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. 9 The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.”

    10 “What should we do then?” the crowd asked.

    11 John answered, “The man with two tunics should share with him who has none, and the one who has food should do the same.”

     12 Tax collectors also came to be baptized. “Teacher,” they asked, “what should we do?”

     13 “Don’t collect any more than you are required to,” he told them.

     14 Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?”

Luke 3:7-14 (NIV)

    John the Baptist had begun his ministry of baptizing and teaching a message of repentance at the beginning of this passage. He saw among the crowds many who were only outwardly repentant without any desire to change their ways. In Matthew the men so accused were the Pharisees and the Sadducees. Since Luke did not identify them as such, we may consider that there were others as well who received this harsh criticism.

     The same is true today, our repentance must be genuine or it is meaningless. His words are for us — he commands us to bear fruit that can only come with repentance. Outward appearances do not turn us into children of God.

     When asked, Jesus told the people to be generous with their possessions and share with those who were needy. He charged the greedy (tax collectors and soldiers) to be honest with people and to be content with honest earnings.

     Those commands were not only for those people, they apply to us today as well. Not everything that is legal is right. Slumlords and loan sharks get rich by taking advantage of the poor. The rich isolate themselves from the poor and may offer little or nothing to help them, while a person who has only a little excess will be much quicker to help meet the needs of others.

     If we are truly repentant of our sins and wish to follow Jesus’ example, we will hold our possessions with open hands, willing to share with those less fortunate.

     Lord, you know our hearts. Help us to be more like you in every way and to hold nothing back to satisfy our own greed.

Psalm 63:1-6 Drawing strength through praising God

His Whisperings Posted on February 3, 2008 by Janice D. GreenFebruary 3, 2008

1 O God, you are my God,

earnestly I seek you;
my soul thirsts for you,

  my body longs for you,
in a dry and weary land
where there is no water.

2 I have seen you in the sanctuary

and beheld your power and your glory.
3 Because your love is better than life,

my lips will glorify you.
4 I will praise you as long as I live,

and in your name I will lift up my hands.
5 My soul will be satisfied as with the richest of foods;

with singing lips my mouth will praise you.

6  On my bed I remember you;

I think of you through the watches of the night. Psalm 63:1-6 (NIV)

This is a beautiful love song to God, written by David when he was going through very tough times.  Even though he found himself in a dry and weary land with no water, he comforted himself with memories of God’s beauty, his glory, and his love; and David made the choice to praise God in spite of his circumstances. We can be certain that some of his comrades at the time would have him curse God because of all the turmoil he was having to deal with during these times of exile from his kingdom.

Yet David had a storehouse of memories from which to draw encouragement, and he used them to full advantage. David had learned about the strength that always came to him when he sang praises to God. He had also learned to store away memories of times when he had been richly blessed by God so he could remember them as he lay upon his bed when life became difficult.

Have you been saving up memories of what God has done for you?  Are you able to sing praise to God, even when you are down?  One of the best remedies I have ever found for spells of depression is to sing along with Christian praise tapes.  Do you have Christian music at your fingertips to lift your spirits?  If not, buy some.  In the mean time, read from the Psalms–those were the songs David sang.  He wrote most of them.

Lord, bring to my memory those special times when I felt close to you on those days when discouragement wants to creep in on me.  Help me to draw closer to you moment by moment.

Psalm 66:1 Shout to the Lord

His Whisperings Posted on February 3, 2008 by Janice D. GreenFebruary 3, 2008

1 Shout with joy to God, all the earth!

2 Sing the glory of his name;

make his praise glorious!

Psalm 66:1 (NIV)

Shout with joy to God.  I have seen this used to God’s glory and I have seen it abused to God’s dishonor.  I am involved with an interdenominational Christian organization that includes Christians from shouting congregations as well as Christians from more reserved congregations coming together to worship.  Both sides find themselves wishing to have it their way expecting the other to agree with them. I have no problem with true joy spilling out into the worship service, and if that joy leads to a shout, then SHOUT!  There are two situations that give me  problems.  I don’t believe the shouting should precede the feelings.  I have seen those of the shouting persuasion try to muster up the feelings by trying to get everyone to just start shouting–even when the majority of the worshipers were not from shouting churches.  I don’t believe God needs our help in this way.  If there is a stirring message, God is honored with our shouts.  It the music stirs our hearts, God is honored with our shouts.  If we come to worship following a spiritual blessing that overwhlems us, share it and shout. But sometimes God wishes to whisper to our spirits in more subtle ways.  He may give us an inner peace that brings tears to our eyes, that puts us in a spirit of quiet rest. We must respect one another’s forms of worship.  The second situation that gives me problems is the hard-hearted bench warmer who is missing the blessings because he feels the need to criticize or laugh at those who would raise their hands or shout praises. The non-Christian community is watching.  Even they seem to understand the words Jesus spoke to the Disciples at the Last Supper:  By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”  (John 13:35)

Lord help us to shout to you in ways that bring you glory.  May we never dishonor your name.

Psalm 66:1-7 Give Him praise and let the world know

His Whisperings Posted on February 3, 2008 by Janice D. GreenFebruary 3, 2008

1 Shout with joy to God, all the earth!

2 Sing the glory of his name;

make his praise glorious!
3 Say to God, “How awesome are your deeds!

So great is your power

that your enemies cringe before you.
4 All the earth bows down to you;

they sing praise to you,

they sing praise to your name.”
Selah
5 Come and see what God has done,

how awesome his works in man’s behalf!
6 He turned the sea into dry land,

they passed through the waters on foot–

come, let us rejoice in him.
7 He rules forever by his power,

his eyes watch the nations–

let not the rebellious rise up against him.
Selah Psalm 66:1-7 (NIV)

Have you ever felt so thrilled with what the Lord has done that you wanted to shout and sing? This scripture encourages you to do just that–wherever you are, let it be known what the Lord has done for you. Give him the praise by telling him how you feel; and give him the praise by sharing your joy with others.

The writer of this psalm is doing just that. He is rejoicing over the many ways God has blessed the Israelite nation, how their enemies had to bow down to God’s strength in defending the Israelites. He continues to elaborate the many ways God displayed his power on behalf of his children.

And God continues to do so today. When is the last time you whooped loudly because a crisis had suddenly ended when God intervened. Or perhaps it was something more subtle–God gave you something you had wished for but hadn’t even stopped to ask him. Sometimes it is these little blessings that warm my heart the most–to know he cares about the little things in my life, to know he knows my heart and wants to tell me he loves me.
